Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public service, recreation and self-training.

But, what does this really mean?!

Ham radio is really a very diverse hobby -- from helping out with communication in local events to putting up satellites in order to communicate around the world! The hobby can take you places you've never imagined or you can talk with friends just on the other side of town. When other communication systems are down (land line and cell phones) or cost prohibitive (satellite phones), ham radio may be the only or most effective method of communication during a disaster.

Using ham radio, I've talked to various diverse places such as Ohio, Japan, Australia and even the Galapagos Islands! Each contact is unique and knowing that I'm talking to someone elsewhere on this globe using less power than a 100w light bulb is truly exciting!

It's also a bonding experience with my husband, who also happens to be a ham (KG6KWW). Together we put up antennas (well, ok, I buy them and HE puts them up) and listen across the world.

What kind of equipment do we have? We have several radios.
